Kehl Housing for the Elderly, Baden
Densification with a view
The new buildings continue the orthogonal layout of the existing ones in a logical way, creating a harmonious ensemble. The footprint, situation and height of the new buildings have been carefully coordinated so as to ensure high permeability, generous views out and good integration. The driveway to the senior citizens' centre is designed as a clearly laid out, prestigious main approach, which also constitutes the first stretch of an attractive path through the site to the woods. The new forecourt has a homogeneous surface treatment enlivened by dynamically shaped islands of planting that endow it with an inner order and a sense of identity.
All of the apartments are of equivalent quality and participate in the attractive internal circulation space, which boasts features such as double-height winter gardens and alcove seating. The modular structure offers maximum freedom in the mixture of apartment types. Even the smallest unit benefits from the quality offered by the L-shaped kitchen/dining/living room layout. In combination with highly efficient use of space and compact planning, this provides the basis for cost-effective senior citizens' accommodation to the Minergie standard.
