trans: through, across, beyond, beyond
At our long-awaited sixth Giro d'architettura a Zurigo – GAZ for short – we took a stroll through Altstetten, which we briefly renamed 'Transstetten' that afternoon.
In recent years, the urban area has changed from a loosely built industrial area to an urban mixed area with a high proportion of residential areas. As a result, we came across a rich pool of striking industrial and commercial buildings and structural witnesses to the rapid transformation of the district. The close juxtaposition of old and new, low and high, hard and soft generates exciting contrasts and gives the district an unmistakable identity and inspired debates from execution details to urban development to housing policy.
