The HPT building, designed by Albert Heinrich Steiner, was constructed between 1963 and 1967 as one of the first buildings on the Hönggerberg. Striking exposed concrete cubes for staircases, lifts and ventilation shafts form fixed anchor points between which the work and laboratory areas are located. The challenge of the refurbishment was to preserve or revive the ‘Steiner skeleton’ and the architectural and heritage qualities while simultaneously fulfilling today's requirements for safety, fire protection, obstacle-free access and laboratories.
