Homes with Options

An ensemble of four buildings has been inserted into the structure of a former hamlet. The external spaces form a sequence of square, garden and courtyard scenarios, with carefully differentiated atmospheres and matching use of materials.

The brief comtains three parts: a residential building, a studio building and the 300-year-old wine-grower's house. The design was commissioned by several separate clients with similar ideas about how they wanted to live, so we developed a basic structure that would ensure architectural coherence while allowing adaptation to individual wishes.

The interiors' visual and spatial relationships to private external spaces and to the surroundings are the same in every unit, but the flexible structures allow them to be rearranged to give the atmosphere desired by the occupants at any time.

Conceived as a dense, intimate development with family house qualities, it provides the occupants with the desired mixture of community, individuality and urban structures.
